Ready to register?  
Sign up for your event online.  Please sign up for scheduled Hokyoji events (or contact us about individual practice) at least 48 hours before your planned arrival.  

For events held by visiting sanghas, please contact those groups directly.

Hokyoji maintains a regular weekly/monthly practice schedule when other events are not in session.


2017

January

Practice Period
January 24 – February 12

Practice periods offer the chance to settle into the rhythm of steady, sustained and structured practice over an extended period of time.  Hokyoji’s practice period schedule does not focus exclusively on zazen, but emphasizes a holistic approach to caring for the body and mind.  There is time for individual relaxation and rest, exercise and body work, and group discussion of a classic or contemporary spiritual text.  Private discussion with a senior teacher is also possible.  

Although full participation in the practice period is encouraged, it is possible to attend in one-week increments (Tuesday to Sunday).  If the one-week option is not possible please call to discuss other possible options with the guiding teacher. You may register online.  Please sign up to participate in a practice period at least 48 hours before your planned arrival.  Not only does this give us the time we need to make sure we can feed and accommodate you, it gives you the opportunity to be thoughtful about your practice commitment.  Suggested contribution: members: $45/night, non-members: $55/night.


April

Spring work weekend
April 21 – 23

When the weather begins to change, it’s time to take care of Hokyoji and prepare it for the season ahead.  Spring means making things ready to welcome practitioners.  Work days include morning and evening sitting practice, communal meals and a variety of work projects, both indoors and out.  In addition to being a terrific opportunity for mindful activity, it’s a good chance to visit Hokyoji, meet others in the community, and get to know what happens here.  There is no charge for this practice; meals and accommodations are provided.

True Heart Womens’ Retreat
May 5 – 7

Nourishing and grounding, gentle and penetrating, the True Heart Women’s Retreat at Hokyoji is a unique opportunity to come together in a beautiful natural setting that has been holding the energy of Buddhist practice for forty years.  Enjoy zazen, dharma discussion, chanting/singing, yoga and outdoor walking meditation.  Enter the spring season as continuous refreshment.  Click here for the complete daily schedule.  Suggested contribution: members: $45/night; non-members: $55/night. Annual Open House
May 13, 1 – 4 pm

Our annual open house is a great way to get acquainted or re-acquainted with everything Hokyoji has to offer.  Drop in with your family and friends!  Tour the facilities, walk the trails, get an introduction to zazen, meet the community,  and enjoy refreshments.  If you’ve never been to Hokyoji but have been interested in seeing it all for yourself, here’s your chance.  Look over the zendo, wander the land and see the wooded ridges and spacious meadows that make up our natural setting, learn to sit zazen, and meet the people that shape and lead our practice.  If you’re an old friend, the open house is a great opportunity to reconnect, get caught up, and make your plans to practice this year at Hokyoji.  It’s also the perfect time to bring your friends and family and show them why Hokyoji is such a special place in your life, and what keeps you coming back to practice.

Caring for the Land Weekend
November 17 – 19

As part of our Land Management Plan, each fall we pay special attention to the needs of the land, clearing trails, brush and deadfall, reducing invasive plants, or planting new growth. The work involves hand and power tools as well as our tractor. There is work for all levels of skill and strength. Please join with us in tending to Hokyoji’s beautiful natural setting and realizing our long-term vision for the land. There is no charge for this practice; meals and accommodations are provided.

Rohatsu Sesshin
December 1- 8 

Join us in the crystal, most likely white, hills of southeastern Minnesota for Hokyoji’s Rohatsu Sesshin, our annual meditation retreat celebrating the Buddha’s Enlightenment.   We’ll let the quiet hills teach us about the peace of real silence.  For more on retreats and a typical daily schedule, click here.  Suggested contribution: members: $45/night; non-members: $55/night.  Partial participation is possible.
