Individual practice and personal retreats

Hokyoji has two options for individual practice during times when no events or breaks are scheduled.  Please check our upcoming events page before making your plans, as we cannot accommodate individual practice and scheduled events at the same time.  Individual practice and personal retreats must be arranged by phone or email at least 48 hours before your planned arrival.  Not only does this give us the time we need to make sure we can accommodate you, it gives you the opportunity to be thoughtful about your practice commitment.  Please note that our usual practice week runs from Thursday morning through Saturday morning.  While it may be possible for you to be at Hokyoji at other times, there will be no communal activities, including meals.

Open Practice

Individuals practice informally with the Hokyoji resident community.  Activities usually include morning zazen and morning and afternoon work periods that may include gardening, mowing, cooking, cleaning or assisting in light maintenance.  Lunch is informal and an evening snack is provided.

Suggested contribution: members: $30/day, non-members: $40/day; if camping, members: $20/day, non-members: $30/day

Self-Guided Personal Retreat

(2-7 days)

Participants are welcome to join the Hokyoji resident community for group practice in the mornings during their stay, and may also use the zendo and enjoy the grounds.  They are offered simple yet comfortable accommodations and are responsible for providing and preparing their own food.

Suggested contribution: members: $30/day, non-members: $40/day; if camping, members: $20/day, non-members: $30
